Governmentto create50,000 new apprenticeshipsfor young peopleto reverse the 40% decline in apprenticeship starts among16-24-year-olds.

Top ranking apprenticeship employershave beenrevealedafterthe publication of thenew leaderboard- withBAE Systems topping the listfor 2026.

The annual Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers and Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers for 2026was published today bythe Department for Work and Pensions in partnership withcareers siteHigherin.

These listsshowcaseemployerswho areopening upcareer pathways and delivering skilled workers through apprenticeshipsacross the country.

The listshighlightthe breadth of careersyoung people can kickstart with anapprenticeship, withdefence and security specialist BAE Systems named the country's number one apprenticeship employer for 2026.Construction firm LJ Construction Carpentry Contractors Ltdwasnamed this year's top SME apprenticeship employer.

Apprenticeships offer a powerful route into rewarding careersfor young people,providingan earn-as-you-learn opportunity that combines real-world experience with nationally recognised qualifications.

The government is boosting the number of apprenticeshipopportunitiesavailabletoyoung people as a priority, building the skilled, motivated workforce that businesses and the economy need.

By reforming the Growth and Skills Levy to give employers greater flexibilityand funding incentives of up to£8,000per young apprentice, the government ismaking it easier than ever for businesses to take onthe next generation ofapprentices.Additionalsupportis availablefor smaller businesses to help them build thetalent pipelinethey need to grow.

These reforms are the biggest transformation of the system in a decadetoensure it is fit for purpose, delivers value for money, and gives businesses the flexibility they need to invest in the talent that will drive growth.

Central to this is a refocusing of investment towards equipping young people with the skills needed for priority sectors, withfoundationapprenticeship units in key sectors includingconstruction, engineering and manufacturing and digitalopening upmore opportunities than ever before.
