U.K., Oct. 23 -- UK Parliament issued the following news:

Responding to figures from the Imperial Grantham Institute estimating 50,000 excess heat deaths in Europe’s urban areas in the summer of 2026, the Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, Toby Perkins MP, said:

"These shocking revelations expose the full scale of the catastrophic excess heat deaths experienced across Europe this summer, with the UK one of the five countries in Europe with the most heat-related deaths.

Never has the need been greater to rapidly decarbonise and transition away from fossil fuels. But we also need to step up our efforts to adapt to the effects of climate change that are already here.

That is the focus of my Committee's new inquiry on climate adaptation. Clearly we need to support those most at risk, including the elderly, the unwell and those from poorer backgrounds, and to act to prevent the collapse of infrastructure that keeps vulnerable people safe in the heat."
