U.K., Oct. 20 -- UK Parliament issued the following news:

Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, joined Speakers and Deputy Speakers from across Europe at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Rome, Italy.

Held every two years, the conference is organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the parliamentary arm of the Council of Europe, which brings together 46 nations to promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

This year's conference focused on how democracies can respond to emerging challenges, including artificial intelligence, hybrid threats, and global crises, while continuing to uphold the values of democracy, freedom, and peace.

During the conference, Sir Lindsay delivered a keynote speech on the role of parliaments in renewing the rules-based international order and responding to modern challenges. He highlighted that strong international cooperation depends not only on treaties and institutions, but also on democratic legitimacy and public trust. He stressed that parliaments play a vital role by holding governments to account, defending democratic values, building trust between nations, and ensuring international cooperation remains connected to citizens' everyday concerns.

Alongside the conference programme, the Speaker held bilateral meetings with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada; Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus; Ville Väyrynen of the Nordic Council; and Omid Nouripour, Vice-President of the German Bundestag.
