U.K., Oct. 13 -- UK Parliament issued the following news:

The Speaker of the UK House of Commons is representing the UK at the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, alongside a cross-party delegation of MPs.

Hosted for the first time by Tanzania, the gathering took place from 5 to 9 October 2026 and focused on discussing the shared challenges of climate change, inequality and the delivery of good governance.

At the Assembly, the Speaker called for renewed public trust in parliaments through accountability, inclusivity, and youth engagement. He emphasised the need to manage emerging technologies, such as AI responsibly and protect democracy from misinformation and interference. He also met parliamentary leaders from around the world. Delegates elected Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, as the next President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Alongside Assembly discussions, Sir Lindsay Hoyle met young Tanzanians and alumni of UK-supported Commonwealth and Chevening scholarship programmes, to hear about their achievements and aspirations for the future.

He also visited a special secondary school where he learned more about long-standing UK-Tanzania collaborations to strengthen inclusive education for children with disabilities and special educational needs.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle said:

"In a world that faces a number of challenges, it's so important for parliamentarians to have a forum to discuss how we deal with these in an ever more interconnected society. The IPU Assembly presented us with a great forum in which we could exchange ideas and best practice with parliamentary colleagues from across the globe.

"I was also pleased to see first-hand how UK-supported programmes have helped develop Tanzania's leaders of the future, as well as our joint efforts to expand inclusive education in the country."
