U.K., Oct. 1 -- UK Parliament issued the following news:
Chair of the Justice Committee and Labour MP Catherine Atkinson said:
“The early release of prisoner cohorts from 1 October is regretfully a matter of necessity after more than a decade of policy failure to manage the estate’s long running capacity issues.
"The safety and wellbeing of all victims impacted, as well as the wider public, must be paramount.
“Serious questions remain over the pressures on probation and prison staff, the effectiveness of electronic monitoring, as well as the system’s readiness to manage the return of offenders back into communities in the coming months.
“As the Justice Committee’s Rehabilitation and resettlement inquiry concluded, efforts to break the cycle of reoffending cannot succeed when the justice sector is facing critical pressures on so many fronts. Ministers must commit the resources necessary to address these issues and keep a watching brief on the workability of all aspects of the scheme.”
